    April 29, 2017... Registration opens December 15.

It's in my back yard, on all my local go-to stuff. I will be out there as long as the date isn't the same as the Catalina Gran Fondo.

If you've never done 50 miles on a mountain bike, this is a good one to try... It's definitely an "easy" 50.

I'll probably do the 25 for this again. I haven't done it in a few years because it has conflicted with my annual Napa trip, Napa is the week after - so it looks like it will be a go for Rwanda.

I did the Rwanda once, and never done the Whiskey. Easy decision for me (Merica first).

its a great charity ride. Over some nice fire and single track.. great support and raffle after... last year they changed the course just slightly, making it more single track fun, and eliminating the climb at the end... About 1200 people but you never feel crowded after the 1st mile.. Gonna do it again... the 50 is the easiest 50 around b/c its like 47.....see you out there!!! (unless of course I'm on the floop!)

In case some people haven't heard, Catalina is not happening this year.

I've done it three times, but not last year when they cut out some of the climbing. I was on Catalina that day. The old start location at Oakley in Foothill Ranch made it necessary to climb Live Oak in O'Neill on the way out and on the way back... With the new start in RSM, you just have the Live Oak climb in the front, and a nice new single track DH. If I do it this year, I will put gears on the bike, because there are some sections that are just too flat for the single speed. The Tijeras Creek single track is fast and twisty with gears... not so much with the single speed.

I live in the middle of pretty much the whole course... If you want to pre-ride anything, let me know. The Caspers loop is a good ride all by itself... mostly fire road, with the occasional chunky fire road section and some rocky creek crossings. It has great views of Starr Ranch, and it's a workout.

Edit: With no Catalina conflict, I signed up for the Rwanda 50 mile ride...

Not a problem... The different parts of the course are all local for me.

And I know where all the best tacos are...

I don't know. When they announced their 2017 schedule there was a very short note that said something like, "No Catalina this year, tough decision."

I know it was a big production to put that on and the numbers were also down from the first few years. I went the first year and last year and loved it both times. I probably wouldn't have gone this year, but it was definitely on my plans to return to at some point.

I think it's a good cause... I'm always skeptical about charities, but there are some visible tangible results from this event, and it's a cool vibe out there. Most of the crowd (1200 or so) are not your hardcore spandex types. They are guys who are pushing themselves a little bit beyond what they're used to. And that's cool to see...

And it's a tax deduction! My wife (financial advisor) says to do any event that's a charity. :whistling:

I've ridden it a hundred times. I must be pretty gutsy. Or nuts.

    Take your pick. :geek:

I've ridden it once, which is plenty for having to drive to it. It's a fantastic resource for locals who can ride it from home, but if you need to drive in order to ride, you might as well go ride on a mountain.

...amazing how the Floop can hijack discussions about other ride locales.

That one is going to be hard to replace in the ride schedule... It was the most costly ride I do all year, but the island atmosphere and the views can't be beat. And you would have liked that single track they added last year, which was pretty similar to Stairsteps.

I carried my bike up Live Oak one year, after the tires became so caked, I couldn't even roll it. That was no fun... But, I'd do it again. :p
