The title refers more to my crash today than the actual ride. Started off at 7 this morning with my buddy Tony to do a tour of the Simi Hills and take him over and show him Ireland. The usual up and over Albertson, into Cheeseboro which included Palo Comado, Shepherd Flats and Gas Pipe.

From there we climbed up Las Virgenes and headed over to the Bell Canyon switchies which leads us to Ireland. Down Ireland and back to Las Virgenes then out to a fire road that takes us back into Cheeseboro.

22 miles in while jamming down the last part of Baleen Wall I was scrubbing some speed knowing that there is usually traffic coming up this blind hill. In doing so I started focusing on a big rut off to the left. I was nowhere near it yet I still found myself going right towards it. Target fixation at its best. It was all I could do to scrub enough speed before I found myself OTB and face planting right into the rut.

I honestly think that is the hardest I have ever hit the ground. I had to be going around 25mph. By the time my buddy Tony came upon me I was already sitting up and in a world of hurt. We assessed the situation and decided 911 was not needed so he called his son to come and pick me up. While he was on the phone with his son I stood up and tried to stretch a little bit. In doing so I felt my back crack and that relieved about 50% of whatever was making me hurt. I told him let's just pedal a little bit and if it hurts too much then I will take the ride home. I actually started feeling better as I was riding. My back was tight but it was tolerable. We ended up finishing the planned ride. Considering what happened I want to say it was still a great ride and I got the mileage and elevation I was looking for. I may actually take a day off tomorrow. Haha! Who am I kidding?

The first pic is the rut I hit coming down. The second is where my bike landed in relation to me. The third of course is my bike taking a nap.

Dang Ed that looks like you went down hard. Hopefully just cuts & bruises and nothing more serious. Probably going to be sore for a few days after that one. Here I thought I was the only one who crashed on the stupid easy sh!t. Funny how we can ride some of the craziest sketchy trails around going warp speed and not crash but then take huge tumbles on easy stuff. Kudos to you for being able to get up and continue. Based on my past experiences I would recommend a recliner and several ice cold brews for the next couple days. Looks like you'll get a new helmet out of the deal to right?

    Face-braking is a weird sport.

Glad it wasn't worse. Self-medicate with cold beverages and heal up quick.

All that perfectly good dirt and you just had to ride in the grass

Props for finishing the ride. Adrenaline cures pain way better than pills.

I already sent an email to Kali. This helmet was already a crash replacement. Not sure how their lifetime replacement works. I would still buy another one of their helmets considering the impact this helmet took and I was able to ride away.

My wife is funny. After my last crash she insisted I go to urgent care and drove me there. Then when the doctor says "well looks like you're not riding your bike for the next few weeks she laughed out loud in his face and said "yeah right"...:Roflmao I tell ya, life would be boring without the great wife & kid & & dog & bikes & friends I have. I suspect yours is the same...

I cracked my Kali Interceptor and broke the visor after one too many tree connections in the San Gabes. I do work at a shop and my results may be different than yours, but the shop owner called up Kali, mentioned what happened, and the Rep replied, "What size and color?"
The helmet was at the shop in 2 days.

Short review: The Interceptor is one of the best helmets I have used to date. I was in between sizes on the Specialized Ambush, but the Kali fit just right. The Boa adjuster works great. The adjustable visor is still a weak point as it shakes in any other position than full down-which happens to work very well so it's not really a problem-for me.
Great option if you're looking for a new helmet.

Ha! Just noticed. After that review, maybe I should change my avatar.

It's the best option. I firmly believe that's one of the reasons I'm sitting here posting right now. I got one of the first ones as a crash replacement. It has definitely served me well. I'm in agreement with the visor. The tiny little plastic pins that attach it to the helmet are flimsy at best. The visor actually folded over and cut my cheek. It was a pretty hard impact though. They're crash replacement warranty was great last time though not sure how it works on the actual crash replacement.
