I decided to take a break from the ST trails today. I felt like doing a consistent pedaling type ride (on dirt) and since I am surrounded by fire roads, I knew that they would fulfill my quest. I set off from home base and headed toward Cherry Canyon. Wasn't I just there yesterday? Yes, I was but today I would stay off the trails. I climbed to the top and took a breather.

From there I dropped down into Glendale Sports Complex, where I was forced to ride the ST trail (OK, twist my arm!) simply because it's the only way down. I then dropped down through the neighborhoods and cut across toward Verdugo Mountain.

I headed up Beaudry road to Beaudry fire road where I jumped back onto the dirt. I took a short breather there in the shade and then I proceeded to climb Beaudry North fire road. I stopped along the way several times during the ride to take pics of the wildflowers, the views, and of a pair of Alligator lizards who thought that they were porn stars.

Got to the top of the mountain in good time and proceeded along the ridge on Verdugo Motorway. The views as you go along are great with the Crescenta Valley on one side and Greater L.A. on the other, including the mighty Pacific on a clear day. I continued on to the tower above Hostetter fire road where everyone likes to sit and take it all in. And I did just that.

From there, I backtracked to Whiting Woods fire road where I proceeded to blast down the steep fire road at idiotic speeds. Made it down safely and pedaled a short way back to home base. Wonderful. :inlove:

I saw deer smoking in my back yard this morning. A whole herd. They were cursing too. Hooligans!

I actually enjoy long fire road rides. I don't think I even rode singletrack for my first several years of MTBing. Lately though riding from home I like to use the fire roads to connect all of my favorite local single track.

People can bag fire roads all they want. They work for me when all I'm looking for is the climbing workout. Which is often. Descents like Monroe are just icing.

With two long chunky single track descents on the VQ route, they still don't come close to the chunky section of Main Divide below the peak. That's been nuts for a couple years now...
