F-ing sucks!!!!

I was not and am not a Soundgarden fan - but I did respect and grow to enjoy Chris Cornell. I thought his work with Tom Morello in Audioslave was better than either Soundgarden or Rage Against the Machine. I hate that these artists are so tortured they feel they have to snuff themselves. He had a drug/alcohol problem in the past, but seemed to have been quite sober for the last many years.

RIP Chris. Say hi to the legends who went before you.

Massive Rockslide Buries Stretch of California’s Highway 1



A major new rockslide has buried a stretch of California's iconic Highway 1 in up to 40 feet of stone and dirt, the latest hit in a soggy winter of slides, floods and road closings along the winding Central California coast road, state transportation officials said Monday.

A swath of the hillside gave way in an area called Mud Creek on Saturday night, covering about one-third of a mile of road and changing the Big Sur coastline immediately below, a spokesman with the California Department of Transportation said.

"A massive slide. We've never seen anything like that," said Colin Jones, the transportation agency's spokesman for the area.

The state already had closed that part of Highway 1 to repair buckled pavement and other, earlier damage from one of California's rainiest winters in decades. Authorities removed work crews from the area last week after realizing that saturated soil in that area was increasingly unstable, Jones said. "Now it's covering 10 times as much," he said.

State road officials plan to wait for the immediate slide danger to pass before going back to start figuring out how to strengthen the hillside and rebuild and reopen that part of the road, he said.

Narrow, windy Highway 1 through Big Sur is a major tourist draw, attracting visitors to serene groves of redwoods, beaches, and the highway's dramatic oceanside scenery.

The rough winter has closed at least two other stretches of road in the area, forcing some resorts to close and some others to use helicopters to ferry in supplies and guests.

Even though the rainy season mostly has stopped and the sun come out again, "it doesn't mean the ground isn't shifting now based on what happened over the winter," Jones said.

Mass wasting. Wouldn't be surprised if the construction of the road contributed to the slide. I like how it changed the shape of the coastline.

 

My buddy was up there when it happened. He was camping at Prewitt Ridge.

 

This more in line with @kioti 's work on The Luge then the @Mikie Robin Mcguire McGs Sawyer work. I think if they team up, they could have it drivable in an afternoon!

Perhaps, if it weren't for all those pesky environmental regulations requiring geotechnical, hydrological, bio and arch and paleo, air quailty, and [gasp]...traffic studies. I mean, what if the road is reconstructed without adequate capacity? And if a bridge is required, who needs adequate freeboard? What about the noise impacts to inner-city poor folk? Where is the environmental justice in that?

 

Wait...what? Easy on the performance enhancers DDD!

 

Tunnel it! Seems to be the most expensive way to do it. Easy to hide money and charge for over runs.... Good practice for finishing the 710 freeway.

This one might be a little much for me, @herzalot. And from the photo it looks like you could rebuild the road and it'd just happen again (or an adjacent slope could fail).

So I'm with @rossage..tunnel it. Or go over the top. That road is not "sustainable!"

From the looks of it, that ain't the first slide in that area.
If I owned the house on the right, I'd be a bit concerned.

 

It is the fate of the California coastline to fall into the sea. Inevitably.
Arrogance and folly built the road, beautiful as it may be.

I prefer to think of it as optimism and a can-do attitude, but obviously that doesn't change the laws of thermodynamics.

If we want to rebuild it, it will be rebuilt. Or we can just let the whole state decay while we pat ouselves on the back for being woke.
