Another one of the rock greats gone. Down home southern rock that transcended boundaries with Cash-like story telling wrapped with ear worm guitar riffs and innuendo-laden lyrics.
MaryJane's last Dance indeed.

 

Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers played a huge role in my music world over the past few decades. Major bummer.

600 shot? How does that happen? Why do we allow that to happen? Why do we accept it and just hope it's not us or our loved ones?

 

600 injured. Not minimizing what happened, but guaranteed many of those were trample injuries.

C'mon, Chris. How does it happen? Someone - with no prior record, no indicators - snaps.

How do we allow it? How would you stop it? Automatic weapons are already illegal.

Why do we accept it? We don't. But we recognize that sometimes the price of an open society is painfully high.

If 60 people had been killed and 530 injured by any other single incident there would be new laws and regulations in a heartbeat. At least some ATTEMPT to make a difference. We make no attempt. We wring our hands and spout our positional rhetoric, and ACCEPT it. "The price of a free and open society?" I refuse to accept that. We are the only nation in the world in which this happens regularly.

The United States is one of the safest countries to live in. Most foreigners will not breach our country because of our military, but because we have the largest gun ownership per capita, the largest non military on the planet.

I abhor what happened in Las Vegas, yeah it sucks. I have close friends who were there and telling me people inches from them were getting capped in the head. We can't control the crazies, the evil, the haters. Just deal with it and try to prevent it.

 

Listen to the raw video. That guy was using fully automatic weapons. He was putting hundreds of rounds downrange in a short time. Absolutely unacceptable that these types of weapons are available without severe restrictions on the selling and buying parties, or at all. These weapons are expressly designed to kill and maim human beings and this event shows just how deadly they can be.
I am a gun owner and I don't think anyone is coming for my Glock or my shotgun just because they want to ban private ownership of assault weapons.
How many more must die before there is some sensible legislation and enforcement?

 

NO and yes.

 

The city of Chicago has some of the toughest gun laws and one of the highest gun related death counts in the nation. On the other hand Texas is one of the lowest gun law states on the books and the State is one of the lowest in gun related deaths. How is that?

 

I’m so glad I am not on social media, this is bad enough.

 

Personally, I would prefer this kinda subject to stay on Social Media, but I'm certainly not going to stop people if they want to talk about it. This is ruff stuff right now. A very sad day to say the least...

 

Because guns make us all safer.... Especially unlimited automatic weapons with huge magazines. If only the concertgoers had been armed, they could have pointed their weapons at the hotel window, fired in unison and stopped the senseless killing. Or maybe the bellman should have been armed and shot the guy dead in advance because he thought something bad might happen.

Look - this is the same old Sh!t. The reason we can't get any better as a society. We refuse to try. We just spout rhetoric and share fictitious talking points to bolster our stance.

I can't begin to influence the point of view of those who think an armed society is a polite and desirable society that makes us safer. I must be wrong.

 

I need my AR-15 to hunt deer.

 

Chris, you and I are not here to solve world problems. This is a mountain bike site.
You have your logic and I have mine. You wanna sit around a kitchen table and talk politics, I'll bring the beer. I find that these discussions solve nothing and only make people angry at the people they love for other reasons. Where should this go from here?

Speaking of deer I saw several today including a nice 5 point buck on the way home. My little dirt road commute is pretty cool sometimes.

 

Did you shoot it with your AR-15? We all need them for sport and hunting.

 

No but the damn ambulance with it's screaming siren scared him off as it blasted down the road.

You know, there used to be a wild fowl firearm called a punt gun. Basically a huge shotgun that was expressly designed to bring down whole flocks of birds with a single shot. This gun and its users are to blame for the extinction of many species of birds and water-fowl, including the passenger pigeon, whose flocks were once so dense they resembled clouds and darkened the skies as they passed. The punt gun was not outlawed until it was too late for entire species.

The M-16 was designed for maximum wounding of enemy combatants. Wounding? Why? Why not just kill the "bad" guys? Because it is economically difficult to deal with all the doctors and nurses and after care for a wounded soldier. A dead guy you can throw in a hole. A wounded guy looks bad walking around in public so it makes a war effort look bad.

My country is ill. I have never experienced turmoil like this before. Damn.

 

I was there in the middle of everything. So surreal. We thought it was fireworks at first then the next set of rounds hit all around us.

We are home and safe and all of my fiends made it out as well. I did a big post on FB that I’ll copy to here tomorrow.

Hug your families and be grateful for another day because it can be gone in an instant. I’m truly blown away by what happened and what we saw.

I’ve been thinking about you all day since you mentioned being in Vegas for a concert during VQ/CC signups in another thread. Glad you and your friends made it home, sorry you went through that.
