Bikepacking? After watching my buds complete the Stagecoach 400, I've had the itch to get some bags and give it a try. After I secured some loaner gear and outfitted my steel hard tail with ultra low 3x10 gearing, I signed up with a SoCal and Beyond Meetup group. The CTC or "Coast to Crest" route uses some of the same trails as the stagecoach route. We did it as a shuttle starting in the town of Julian, following the route to a finish at dog beach in Solana. We split the 75 mile route and camped under some oak trees around Pamo Valley. It's about 80% dirt and from what I understand there may be more trails added someday to eliminate the road sections. If that were ever to happen, this would definitely be an epic route as the road sections were a bit sketchy. That said, it is still a fantastic route and I had the pleasure of riding it with a very cool bunch of guys.

OH... and speaking of cool group of guys... Anyone recognize that guy in the 2nd shot riding across the bridge? Kinda funny, I kept thinking I know who this guy is. Blue Toyota truck with GOMTBN lic plate, fancy camera stuff, name is Bill, likes good bourbon... nah... is it? No one brought it up until we finally asked him on day 2. The king of Ride Reports!

All these older ride reports are coming up, and you got me thinking about this as a long single day ride... My wife or son could drop me (us- any takers, I wonder?) off in Julian, and meet me at the end of the day in Del Mar... Hmmmm... The wheels are turning.

The Filthy 50 uses a lot of the same trail... I may reconsider doing that one, just to check it out.

Congrats on the fine initiation. Thanks for the run down and photos.

Liquor shots, cattle tanks, varied terrain, waking up with your bike...what's not to love about bike-packing? What do you make of this weird hybrid of backpacking and riding? Do you plan on doing more of it, getting your own kit worked out? What advice would you give others who seek to do this stuff?

    Cheers; ride on.
