Don't you hate it when your pithy comment goes to the top of the next page so we have no idea what you're referring to? At least, that's how it reads on my computer.

And please, modern hiking boots or trail shoes mute the trail too... Barefoot, baby!

Any bike I buy from here on out will have + tires. Would be nice to full a full on fat tire bikes but I would not get much use out of it. I resisted 27 tires for a long time as I was used to 29ers, the 27+ platform won me over. Now normal width tires feel unsafe. I know they are slower but I am able to ride more chunk on them.

Looks like we don't get an opportunity to see if Jared Graves' new "best bike in the universe" is all that, since he flatted in two stages of yesterday's EWS in Whistler on his new steed. Poor Jared has been plagued by flats on his Speshy tires in all rounds of the EWS except Snowmass. The interweb warriors are suggesting he should run blacked-out Maxxis (like Aaron Gwin does, and the Athertons used to do while sponsored by Continental). Sounds like a good idea to me.

And for those of you who think I believe a.) this is actually the best bike in the universe or b.) it's the bike and not the pilot, I believe neither. I used the title as provocation for discussion, and to highlight the evolution of the full-suspension all mountain machine. Looks like it worked.

Re: flats, it's not the brand of the tire on the sidewall, it's how tough of a casing the rider chose to run, vs the weight they want to carry and pedal, vs the tire pressure they decided to run for the most traction. If they think they can ride light and get by with a lighter tire/casing, and then they flat.... it's a gamble they lost, or just got unlucky and cased a sharp rock or something, or ran the pressure too low.
Some prefer to ride DH dual ply casings but then have to lug them up the hills, but any DH tire is gonna be better at resisting cuts and punctures than another brand's lighter trail casing. Imho, Maxxis Exo is not necessarily more puncture resistant than Spec Grid casing (maybe opposite with the new Grid casings being heavier this year so I've heard). But a DH casing from any brand is more tough than Exo or Grid.
Yackety yak, pick a tire and a pressure and have fun, and carry a tube and a pump :)

Nice. I'm a big fan of the monster truck or rather monster bike. Love the way they plow. Being a 29er it smooths out the trail up and down. Big suspension for big hits and latest light weight components make the beast easy to maneuver. Almost bought the E29 but found the WFO instead. The E29 has shorter chainstays but higher BB, higher stand over and shorter top tube (medium). The differences are slender though. Got to admit I haven't been riding the WFO much lately because I've been hooked on making rides more challenging. The monster bike is too easy to ride.

  25. Some strange undertones in this thread.....I don't even know what this thread is really about. One thing is for sure, nothing can match the fun of a properly set up full blown DH racing long travel bike paired with really nasty rocky, drop filled, torn up trails.

Well, it was supposed to be about the evolution of the true all-mountain trailbike, but it become a diatribe about "It's not the bike, it's the rider" and "the best bike is the one you are on" and other holier/cooler/more core-than-thou posts. Oooops - did I type that out loud?

No matter - with an intentionally provocative title, I expected a bit of a shitstorm.

For the record - I still hate Specialized (the company) and would never buy the bike featured on post #1. I'm very happy that Yeti spoiled the Speshy's debut - unlike when Yeti debuted their SB-6 at Winter Park and Jared Graves on an SB6 or Richie Rude on a prototype SB-5 won every stage and finished 1-2. Now that was a bike rollout!

The best bike in the universe is/was the Gary Fisher Roscoe III. No bike handles like the Roscoe. Unfortunately the driver-side chain stay kept breaking, so it is/was the best bike while it lasted. Nothing gold can stay.
