Another hop head here and I've been fortunate enough to have had Westvleteren, to help repair the roof of course. I also had a bottle of the Trooper, only because of the label.

So any thoughts on the recent sale of Ballast Point for... wait for it... one billion US American dollars!
First Lagunitas, then Golden Road, now Ballast Point. Everybody's cashing out!

Ahem... an IPA IS a pale ale...

    Just sayin...

They are selling the Chimay grand reserve (blue label) at CostCo (the big 750 ml bottle) for $10.99. A great beer.

Cost of entry into the craft brewing market is now so low I'm not sure what buying up these niche brands gets you. Reminds me of the domestic beer market in the 1970's - huge wave of consolidation leading to just a handful of brewers controlling the market, which then opened the door for craft brewers.

I guess cost of entry for the huge multi-nationals is relatively low as well. What's a billion here or there?
I'm projecting here a bit, but seems like the indies would lose a lot of goodwill by selling out?
Although maybe not, as I still love Lagunitas IPA...

Unless you follow this closely and if the quality and taste don't change you'd probably never know it was sold...I like Lagunitas, haven't noticed a change, did not know it had been sold.

My local supermarket, Gelson's carries Space Dust which love as well as a couple of other Elysium brews. They have quite a few locations but they tend to be in the SFV and north LA area.

I went to Whole Paycheck (Whole Foods) for some Holiday cheeses and they had it. It's a one-off that they made at the end of October. I checked BevMo, but they did not have it, so I went back. Worth the extra buck.

I went to Hanger 24 on Saturday after a ride up Lock Leven / SART. It was windy and cold! They had some big charity event at Hanger 24 and it was super packed with people. We only stayed for one beer and then grabbed lunch at Eureka Burger.

Is it seasonal?? Haven't seen it there. Or is it just in the larger bottle and not a sixer?

Like Bitter Foods? You're Probably a Psychopath

Today, I've found even more proof that I'm probably a psychopath. Not only do I enjoy taking selfies, but I also love bitter foods like coffee. Yep, according to a new study published in the journal Appetite, there's a correlation between liking bitter foods and being a sadistic psychopath.

The study was conducted via Amazon's Mechanical Turk, an online platform that pays users to perform simple online tasks—tasks like filling out surveys about personality traits and food preferences.

"The results suggest that how much people like bitter tasting foods and drinks is stably tied to how dark their personality is."

The researchers took to Mechanical Turk twice, surveying almost 1,000 people in total. The participants completed multiple personality tests and rated their preferences regarding four different tastes: bitter, sweet, sour, and salty.

For bitter foods, the study included beer, celery, coffee, radishes, and tonic water. At the end of the study, researchers determined that liking bitter foods can be a "robust predictor for Machiavellianism, psychopathy, narcissism, and everyday sadism."

The study sums up the findings well, noting "the results suggest that how much people like bitter tasting foods and drinks is stably tied to how dark their personality is." Researchers also found that people who had an affinity for bitter foods were less agreeable than those who liked sweets.

So there you have it, folks. If you enjoy bitter beers or can't get enough coffee in the morning (like me), you are probably a cold, heartless human-being.

So apparently I'm a bitter old fart, likely to pull the wings off flies and now I have justification. And it's not my fault!

But I don't like tonic water. Too bubbly.

Well, even if my wife doesn't care, I have a very cool daughter who likes to see me happy. My stocking stuffers included Lagunitas Sucks, Deschutes Chasin' Freshies IPA, Ballast Point Grapefruit Sculpin and Rogue's Yellow Snow IPA. Not a bad haul for a stocking.
