I'm curious to ask where you all would go if you had the weekend to yourself and you wanted to head to cooler weather trails? I have this Friday thru Sunday all to myself and it got me thinking about a weekend mountain bike trip.

Was looking for trails that would be worth a drive and hopefully cooler than the OC has been lately.

Guess i could just head to Mammoth for some DH fun since i've never ridden that park...

    Any suggestions??

big bear... mammoth is and will be Sh!t for most of the year. I'm guessing that they may get some of their marquee trails open for september, only to close up again in mid oct.

plus Big Bear is so much closer... never ridden bicycles in BB only dirt bikes and jeeps. when you say BB, are you talking about SART and Skyline trails?

are the trails easy to follow and find?

Trails are easy to follow and those 2 trails are worth the drive.

I think it's fun to do a combo Skyline and Snow Summit Bike Park day, if you like bike park riding and have a bike that does both well (5-7" travel - reasonable tires, etc.).

EDIT: High temps will be in the low 80s in Big Bear Friday and Saturday. Lower highs predicted for the Aliso/LCWP areas of OC.

Still, probably more fun to get away and do something different up in the mountains.

BIG BEAR, of course. It's close and yet it feels far away, like a true escape should feel.

Otherwise, Santa Barbara or San Luis Obispo.

    Isn't Santa Barbara on fire?

Surprised no one has mentioned Idylwild yet.

    Idy area is an option.

The ranger station in Mentone has a great little pocket guide to SART for MTBers. It covers the upper part ("Post Office" loop).

This one is an easier climb up to South Fork....it also bypasses the Post Office Loop:

This one has the PO Loop and climbs the singletrack to the top....or the regular route:

Idyllwild weather for this weekend says it will be hotter than Angelus Oaks area. wonder if i should wait for a newbie SART ride to tag along instead of doing my first time up there solo. lol

Idy has a saturday morning group ride with Brendan (Hub bike store). Good ride with good sample of the trails. Check the store for the ride time, usually 8am.

The upper loop is a pretty safe place to be. Not remote. I went sight-unseen, grabbed that map from the rangers and had a great day with the wife.

Haha...I was going to say Mammoth. The other place I would say is good is Red Rock in Vegas...but this time of year it's like 1000 degrees.

I'll be heading to Mammoth in early September...hopefully the trails will be in good shape by then.

OK, well deserved, but I LOVE riding elsewhere. (No, not the Santa Anas, Chino Hills or Fullerton). I just don't get much opportunity, so I want it to be great. CO, UT, OR, AZ, Canadia... I currently have a hankering to wake up in the real mountains (CO) and ride at altitude.

So yes, of the ideas mentioned here, Big Bear looks like a winner.
