Would it be possible to reduce the default image size on the forum so that threads aren't showing 4K screen captures of apps, etc? When people don't resize their images before posting them, a thread becomes a massive bandwidth hog - even with an Ethernet wired connection. I'm not saying go all the way to thumbnails, but maybe scale the default to 800x600 (or similar) with the option to "click here to see full resolution".

I agree. Reloading all those full size photos everytime I click to see a response really harshes my mellow.

Guilty as charged! I don't have a problem with an automatic resize... My only suggestion would be to take the panoramas into consideration, as they get big quick. Not sure how they would fare scaled to 800x600.

Can't you choose the size to upload? I post all mine from flickr, and it lets me choose. I post the next to ginormous option, as I figure everyone desperately wants to see every detail of where I rode my bike.

I usually export mine from the Photos app on the Mac, and do the same thing. I always choose "large", but could probably do with medium. Is slow loading something that people are seeing?

Sometimes the pages load slower than others. But for me it is on those pages that have tons and tons of pics. I figure it is quantity, not so much quality.

I would take slow loading for the sake of good looking TRs.

People could stop posting strava screen shots and post more pics, maybe there wouldn't be complaints :sneaky:

Please don't turn this into MTBR with crappy half screen photos

I've noticed this; more on the phone than on the desktop. But I agree with @evdog - worth waiting for on many of the RRs.

It's not that I don't want to see the photos. I would like the option of seeing them in a smaller format. I don't think I need to re-load full size pics just to see what somebody 's comment is.

Let me restate my original post for those of you who are a little unclear about how these things work.

You can upload an image of any resolution you desire (assuming it is within a size limit set by the forum admin). Then the forum software will decide at what resolution to display the image in a thread - whether to display it at full resolution, reduced resolution with a "click here to see full scale" option, or thumbnail with a "click here to see the full scale" option.

The issue with displaying all images full scale is that every time you update a thread - all of those images need to reload unless they are cached on your device. To give you an example, UPSed posted a weather screenshot from his phone earlier today. Even compressed, that image is slightly over 1MB. That's a ton of bandwidth for an image that is 900 x 1600 pixels, but which (in my opinion) would be perfectly viewable in a thread at 450 x 800 pixels, with a quarter of the file size. Then, if for some reason you want to see the original image in full resolution, you can always click the image and wait for it to download the original.

I mostly view this site on a PC with a 4K monitor (3840 x 2160). I am amazed by the number of images that are so huge that they can't even fit on my screen.

People complain about the responsiveness of the site, and how long it takes for pages to load. Well, this is an extremely easy way to get it to load 4x faster (or more) without giving up image quality - you just might need to click on the image to see it full size instead of having it show up full size in the thread.

    That's what I'm saying too.
I primarily view on mobile or small laptop (Acer) and I use a mobile network or wifi so I have to watch my usage.
Even the porn sites give you a choice as to whether you want HD content or not, uh, um, or so I've heard.:whistling:

I dunno.....I have seen very few pictures that are too big to fit on my screen....whether it be on my phone or laptop....and neither is 4K.

This is the key... some reason the images are not cached...they should be. Perhaps the content type has no cache time / TTL etc. Then they would only load once, and when you come back to an updated thread only the new images would need to be loaded.

The setting I see on the images from imtb is something like which has no cache time.
    Cache-control: private
    Downloaded every time.

    Instead of something like
    Cache-Control: max-age=31536000, private
the image is *not* re-downloaded it is kept in the device local cache for a long time

i.e. Someone should take a look at the site / web server settings

    cache-control private, max-age=0

This is set by the Xenforo forum software. I do not see any way to revise this in the Xenforo default options, but I am looking into it.

Probably because your browser is scaling your image - even though you have downloaded the high resolution image it is scaling it to fit in your window.

@BonsaiNut You may need to contact your hosting service as it may be in the .htaccess file which governs the actual Apache webserver that Xenforo runs behind. That or log into the Go Daddy console it may be there in the web server settings.

    Better
    http://xenforo-tutorials.blogspot.com/2012/02/quickly-and-greatly-speed-up-your.html

and if I were you I would cache images for 1 month or 1 year its not once an image is uploaded it would change.

    1 month would be
    2419200

    # 1 WEEK
    <FilesMatch "\.(jpg|jpeg|png|gif|swf)$">
    Header set Cache-Control "max-age=2419200, public"

    EDITED with better info

LOL I'm not the site admin :) I just know this because I own and run a different Xenforo site :)

One of the members here, Andy, is a Xenforo wiz who will be able to tweak it in an instant, depending what they want to do.

    Plus one!
    .
Its not the final size that shows on the screen that is the problem. ( but probably the root cause.)
I just wanna read the latest post or two. And the page keeps scrolling up as the pics load.
Then I gotta try to scroll back down to find what I was reading....then more pics load and it auto-scrolls up again.
    Again and again sometimes....

Here is what I want to do.
I'm going to contact my go-to guy AndyB.
I would like to do 3 things, and have been thinking about one for quite a while.
    1. Set up basically what you guys are asking for. A reasonably sized pic size default that opens with the post with an option to click on it and full size it.
    2. Set up pics to be thumbnails for non members viewing until they join the site.
    3. Set up the Hotties Thread to where it's all 4K quality...

    Got it!
