I came across some shady guy at work who was riding a VERY nice Giant Reign XO at 2am on the streets of Santa Ana. He didn't know anything about the bike and said he had recently bought it for cheap at a local swap meet. If you guys know anyone that's had their Giant stolen have them PM me. If no one comes forward this guy will unfortunately get the bike back.

The guy is in custody for something unrelated, but he will be out in a couple of weeks or so. Yes, I took the bike from him.

The dropper post needs a rebuild. Hah

    Are you a cop?
That must have been a funny exchange. "Nice reign. Where do you ride?"
    Guy: "Huh? I don't know what you're saying, I don't have a ring."

    Hahah yes I'm a cop.

The exchange actually went like this..
Me:nice bike dude, what kind of wheels are those?
He looks at the front wheel and says... Maxxis (they were crank brothers)

I checked the stolen bike registry but the bike didn't come up... Any other website recommendations to look up these bikes by serial number?

I have a strong feeling the owner of the bike didn't write down the serial number.

Craigslist in OC, make someone prove the bike is theirs by description. If the original owner bought it locally the shop SHOULD have a record of the sale with the name and serial number.

@Chevrolegs if the bike was purchased from a bike shop, the serial number should be registered with Giant. Maybe you can run it down through them. Just a thought.

Don't let that scum sucker take that bike back! Can't someone just shoot him and drag his carcass through town?

Additionally, allz of yooz who patron giant dealers: please give those shops a heads up that a stolen Giant Xo is out there in case the victim declares it to them. I know my LBS would want to know if my rigs got jacked, and I would call all the shops I could for support.

Back to the douche...just shoot him and all his current roommates as well.

He said he paid 400 bucks for it.. And it supposedly came with an almost new pair of 5 10's and orange straight line flat pedals that were in his backpack...

Sheet... I don't know the dude but I bet he doesn't have 10 bucks let alone $400 to his name. But if he actually did buy it for $400, rest assure that he bought a stolen bike.
Throw it up on a few of the mountain biking pages on Facebook. I bet you'll get a hit.

    @Chevrolegs -

He doesn't sound like the smartest criminal in the world.

How far do stolen goods usually travel in a case like this? Is it a safe bet that the initial theft was within "X" miles?

Just curious... I've been on the victim side a few times, and I always wondered how far our stuff would go... In Florida, a stolen vehicle from our driveway didn't even warrant a police response. They did offer to mail us the forms for a report, however... Much nicer experience when our car (and a dozen others) were broken into at the Irvine Spectrum.

I haven't dealt with stolen bikes very much.. This is actually the first really nice bike that I've come across at work so I can't really say how far they travel before they're recovered.

What I have dealt with a lot is stolen cars and those USUALLY stay within the same county where they were taken.
