Living out in the sticks like we do Cathy and I have been signed up for Netflix for years. Cathy is the voratious readers. Me, I'm the books on tape guy. With no kids and day light savings out the window, long dark evenings are often filled with movie watching.

With winter coming on and short days ahead, the Movie Thread.

Last night we watched, what I would call a "sleeper" titled Black Sea.

Starring Jude Law it's about a modern day submarine captain with a rag tag crew that was comissioned to go after a Nazi U-Boat with millions of dollars in gold bars on it to fund the war shipwrecked out in the Black Sea. The crew's greed forces the plans to go very wrong!

I wasn't really sure what to expect, but I have always liked Jude Law. It was gripping and intense and a much better movie than expected!

EDIT: Add the trailer. Good Idea!

If I remember correctly it's rated R (like most movies nowadays, so there's language and violence.)

Have a difficult time finding decent movies to watch. Don't know how many times I start one just to turn it off after 20 minutes.

So Black Sea is now on my list.

An older movie and one of my favorites is " The Salton Sea". With Val Kilmer and Vincent D'onofrio. An unusual scene is where they plan to rob a transport of Bob Hopes stool sample...WTH?
The Trailer does not do it Justice...

Was pleasantly surprised when I watch a movie called "the Perfect Host". A Robber getting away from the Police is looking for a house to hide in for the night. He chooses one and boy, are the tables turned!

Must see (older) comedies: Drop Dead Gorgeous, Waiting for Guffman. Both are "mockumentaries" that is, shot in a documentary style with lots of room for ad libbing.

Drop Dead Gorgeous features Denise Richards, Kirstie Allie, Kirsten Dunst, Ellen Barkin and Allison Janney. Set in rural Minnesota, it's about a teen beauty contest that comes down to the highly-favored-but-unlikeable town princess who has everything (Denise Richards) and the very lovable and talented trailer park girl (Kirsten Dunst). Someone starts trying to kill off the contestants, but no one is spared from the humor including anorexics, religious, hunters, developmentally disabled - you name it, they get skewered. This one will make your face hurt from laughing.

Waiting for Guffman is a similar style, but features the cast who put mockumentaries on the comedic map with Spinal Tap, A Mighty Wind and Best in Show. Christopher Guest, Fred Willard, Eugene Levy, Parker Posey, Bob Balaban, Catherine O'Hara - the usual lineup that came from Second City Television years ago. In Guffman, the little town of Blaine Missouri is looking to throw a great celebration for its 150th anniversary. They enlist the services of Corky St. Claire (Christopher Guest) a local former Off-Broadway director to cast and direct a musical to honor the history of Blaine. Friggin' hysterical - especially if you've ever been around community or high school theatre.

    I went to film school and so did my gf (now fiancée.) I chose not to work in film after a few gigs as a PA (got fired and rehired on all of them:) but, she is an agent now. We differ a lot in our film tastes; she's more "pop," and I'm...not. She also likes a lot of her client's work-as she should. But my three favourites of all time are;

Badlands-Terance Malick's film,;gorgeous cinematography, Martin Sheen at his best.

-Y tu mama tambien- An amazing Mexican film, beautifully shot. Really engaging story line about best friends on a road trip w/ a sort of "coming of age," twist.

-Masculine/Feminine-Godard at his best. Awesome and -at the time-cutting edge editing. Influenced (IMO) by Hitchcock,Truffout and Rhomer (Sp?) I personally believe the film give a nod to French anarchism and anti-commercialism.

My favourite part of my gf's job is when she gets "screeners," in December and we take them to my parent's house for x-mas. My parents get soo excited that they get to see movies before the release date.

We did this one the other night:

Basically a 2hr car chase....I liked it.....I like the fact that so much of it was done with practical effects....no digital car crashes.

I try to keep one goof ball movie on the DVR to keep us entertained. Right now it's Best in Show (my favorite Christopher Guest/Michael McKeon mockumentary).
We are in the middle of season one of Ray Donovan which is very good (my opinion) but intense.

It's Veteran's day... well on Wednesday it is.
"American Sniper" and "Lone Survivor" are must sees. Sure, they amped the stories up a bit, Hollywood does that. But both made me simultaneously proud and angry.
We have some of the most dedicated, capable people defending this country. (Proud)
We routinely put them in some pretty F$%^ED positions. (Angry)

On a lighter note... "Office Space" never disappoints!

I saw this movie in the theatre back in the 70's, and try to watch it again when I can as it comes up on Dish every so often. I still get a kick out of it. It's nothing cerebral, just good ol' slapstick physical comedy bits that build up and keep on delivering. Definitely my favorite Peter Sellers movies too.

Apocalypto was pretty good as I recall. This particular scene was badass:

Also, the Shining was very scary for me. I watched it alone in the dark at home once (I don't think I finished it, that scene with the masked two ppl in the hotel room was messed up!) The sounds/music in that movie were very creepy...

    You guessed it: Hall Pass

Especially the blasting of poo from a girl wearing a thong, splatters the tub wall after sneezing scene. I laughed so hard I had to stop the movie just to regain my composure.....

Well, it's more of a mini-series than an movie, but I just came across this on Netflix a couple of weeks ago and binge watched it over a weekend.

    Narcos

A little off topic, but one of the main characters also played Oberyn Martel on Game of Thrones. All I kept hearing whenever he jumped on the screen was "you raped my sister, murdered her, and killed her children". If any of you are G.O.T. fans, you'll know the scene I'm referring to.

Our son just started watching Fargo season two with us. I've been meaning to check out the returned, mostly because I heard Mogwai did all the music for it.

We've got screeners! We'll be dropping 'em off at my parent's this weekend. I'll try to get a video of my dad's reviews.:)

Speaking of movies... I've got a date with a princess, a scoundrel, a farm boy, and a bickering married couple on Friday!
Anybody else braving the madness to see TFA on Thurs or Friday? I remember the feeling 35 years ago when I got to see Empire on the first day and how magical that was for me at 10 years old. Taking my kid to see in Thursday, hopefully will be as good!

Much as I liked seeing Star Wars IV in the theater in 1977, I'm much older and crotchetier now. But we do have a Kevorkian theater that tends to be underutilized less than a mile away. Depends on the size of the crowd.
