Anyone here ever do the Big Bear MTB Gran Fondo? I'm considering doing it this summer. I can't decide between the 30k or 50k, but leaning towards the 50k. Does anyone know if the trails are open in the Big Bear area? I'm not referring to the Snow Summit bike park. I know those open Memorial Day weekend, but i'm not quite ready for the bike park, except for their beginner run.

Dunno about the Fondo, but the forest trails are always open - other than Snow Summit. I can't imagine there's any snow on them, given the dismal winter they had.

Sorry. Newbie mistake, i forgot all about doing a search. Thanks for the links @Faust29. What distance are you planning to do? I want to do the 50k. I've biked 50k at sea level, but never at 8000 ft elevation. I'm planning a practice run soon to see how the high elevation affects my endurance.

Good on ya for going big. Just remember, on these types of rides it's not so much the distance as the elevation gained at elevation. That's what usually leads to my demise.

I hear that the lake is approaching it's record low elevation (lake level). :(

Since Snow Summit and Bear Mt. stole all of the water out of the lake to make snow, I was kinda hoping the snow they stole would melt back into the lake. I guess it loses a lot to absorption and evaporation.

Distance is almost irrelevant in mt. biking. It's all about vertical feet climbed.

If I do it, I'll go for the 100... Nothing like a little suffering!

In the past, the date has conflicted with when we take the kid back to college. This year, I think I'm in the clear for both kids.

I have done the Fondo 2x. It is the same 60 miler that they use for the race....however, we are not racing. Well it's not supposed to be a race...but we are timed. I dunno.

The 100k is a good ride....tough ride, but good.

The 50k keeps you on the Big Bear side of the mountain.....basically you do all of Skyline from end to end.

The 75k & 100k have you drop down 7 Oaks off the back side of mountain. The 75k has you immediately climb back up Radford Grade, while the 100k climbs up to South Fork before doing SART back to 7 Oaks, then up Radford.

For the 100k you are in for 60 miles/8000' of climbing.

A friend did the 50k last year and loved it, as it was all the fun stuff on Skyline.

    Fun rides for sure.

Elevation doesn't bother me up there. First year I drove up that morning, last year we stayed for the weekend.

Skyline should be open soon. I imagine that the trail is open, but they may not have cleared all the down trees that normally happen over the winter.

My plan was to start with the 50k this year, then do the 75k next year, then the 100k the following year. If i jump straight into the 100k this year, then it leaves me nothing to work towards the next couple of years.

@mtnbikej Stop trying to talk me into it. I'd rather kill it with the 50k and work my way up to the 100k. Although i'll know better after i get a practice run in.

Skyline is in perfect condition. Cabin was a bit jacked up, Pine Knot was good with some loose sections. No snow.

Following.... I'd like to do this type of ride. I enjoyed the riding I did last year at Snow Summit bike park. ( Mostly non-black diamond ) The Skyline trail would be perfect for me. My wife and I stayed in the multi-room condos at Snow Summit bike park. It cost like $ 200.00 for the night.

Yes... With all the different distances available from 20k to 100k. It's part of the NUE series, so you can register for the race version or for the fondo version. I'm not a racer, but I'd like to do the 100.
